Fences 04:28
I’m pulling up numbers and turning pages Fences line the road when we drive at night Waterways rise up and stretch We can be so stiff sometimes I forget how many times I’ve seen it It probably slips your mind Once we get to where it’s quiet I can’t seem to slow myself down I crack my fingers / My father would tell me to stop They’re stronger now, they hold me up in ways you wouldn’t know You watch me circle / You do the same in your mind What happens when you let it all stream out of you
2.
Aren’t we all just trying To make it work in our corner Don’t we all stay up thinking We pretend that we move unnoticed Behind private walls Each move in parallel with our neighbour Dancing in tandem behind different doors We’re both afraid to knock To ask how we’ve really been In our pictures we’re smiling We don’t share the moments Where we’re looking in the bathroom mirror For five minutes straight Waiting for an answer - I don’t do that anymore Fingerprints patterning, tracing ghosts, Real ones where we’ve buried old dreams They sneak back in When we take a moment to pause
3.
Blanket 02:55
I give words so much weight I tangle them up with meaning You toss them back and forth We watch as they come apart We eat from the same table But we’ve killed all conversation We let an old line divide Our attention, so we let things slip No wonder we want to bury down It’s like a blanket that will smother Unless you stick your neck out I have a hard time speaking my mind Wa watch as it’s flooding We sit at our screens and feel like we’re doing something I want to carve out space But who knows where we’ll be in 30 years
4.
Piecemeal dinners and slow cars It’s hard to start from nothing Quiet clapping in a big room I asked so long to be taught but I don’t need those words anymore Silent gestures, small kindness, brief beauty I used to think I needed to leave this But you hear more when it’s quiet So I lay my ear to the ground Who can say a place is empty When they’ve never been at all A memory can fill a room It took me a year to realize So I slowed things down
5.
Bricks 02:36
Look at us now, look at how we’ve grown Pushing past comfort, laughing at the shoulds Brick by brick, laying a foundation Six years can hold so much But we knew we’d end up here. Words can’t express what you already know. Look at us now, look at how we’ve grown.
